NEPSE Share Market Guide 2026: How to Open Demat, Apply IPO & Trade in Nepal
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) is the sole regulated stock exchange in Nepal, facilitating capital mobilization and secondary market trading for commercial banks, hydropower companies, microfinance institutions, mutual funds, and manufacturing corporations. With over 6.2 million Demat accounts and rapid digitization through MeroShare and online Trade Management Systems (TMS), investing in the NEPSE share market in Nepal has become one of the most accessible and rewarding avenues for long-term wealth creation.
Whether you are a beginner looking to submit your very first 10-kitta Initial Public Offering (IPO) application or an aspiring trader looking to understand stock broker accounts, this comprehensive guide covers the end-to-end investment process in Nepal.
What is NEPSE and How Does the Nepal Stock Market Work?#
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) operates under the direct regulatory supervision of the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON). Listed companies on NEPSE are categorized into primary sectors including Commercial Banks, Development Banks, Finance, Hydropower, Life Insurance, Non-Life Insurance, Microfinance, Hotels & Tourism, Manufacturing & Processing, and Investment.
Trading occurs electronically through licensed brokerage firms via the automated NEPSE Trading System (NOTS / TMS). Trading hours run from Sunday to Thursday between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM (NST), with pre-open sessions from 10:30 AM to 10:45 AM.
You must hold a savings account in any "A", "B", or "C" class commercial bank or financial institution licensed by Nepal Rastra Bank. Ensure your bank supports C-ASBA (Centralized Application Supported by Blocked Amount). Compare high-yield savings accounts using our Nepal Banks Guide.
A Demat (Dematerialized) account holds your shares electronically, eliminating physical paper certificates. It consists of a 16-digit BOID number. Demat accounts can be opened at any commercial bank, merchant banker (Capital), or licensed stock broker.
Managed by CDS and Clearing Limited (CDSC), MeroShare is the centralized online portal (meroshare.cdsc.com.np) used to apply for IPOs, FPOs, right shares, and transfer shares via Electronic Delivery Instruction Slip (EDIS).
Your bank issues a unique CRN number upon verifying your Demat account with your bank details. This code authorizes MeroShare to temporarily block funds in your bank account when applying for an IPO.
Step-by-Step: How to Apply for an IPO in Nepal via MeroShare#
Applying for an IPO takes less than two minutes once your accounts are active:
Log in to MeroShare: Navigate to meroshare.cdsc.com.np or open the MeroShare mobile app. Select your depository participant (DP), enter your username, and password.
Go to 'My ASBA': In the left sidebar navigation, click on My ASBA and navigate to the Apply for Issue tab.
Select Active IPO: You will see all open public issues. Click the Apply button next to the desired company.
Fill Application Details:
Choose your Bank Name and Account Number.
Enter your applied unit count (The standard minimum lot in Nepal is 10 shares, costing NPR 1,000 at par value).
Enter your bank-provided CRN Number.
Accept Declaration & Enter Pin: Read the disclosure terms, enter your 4-digit transaction PIN, and click Submit.
Verify Application Status: Under Application Report, verify that your status shows Unverified initially, followed by Verified once your bank blocks the required amount.
How to Trade on the Secondary Market (Opening a Broker TMS Account)#
If you wish to buy and sell already-listed shares, you must register with a registered stock broker:
Under SEBON guidelines, every valid applicant is allocated a minimum of 10 shares through a randomized lottery system until all available shares are distributed.
How long does it take for IPO allotment results to appear on MeroShare?#
Allotments are typically declared within 3 to 7 working days following issue closure. Results can be verified on MeroShare under Application Report or via iporesult.cdsc.com.np.
Can Nepali citizens living abroad invest in NEPSE?#
Yes. Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs) and foreign migrant workers can open Remittance Demat and C-ASBA accounts to participate in the reserved 10% foreign employment quota for all public IPOs.
